Chargify, in partnership with Redefine Properties and Mercedes-Benz South Africa, has completed the installation of 11 new electric vehicle charging stations at key Redefine Properties locations. This milestone represents a significant leap forward in addressing South Africa’s EV infrastructure needs while promoting the adoption of clean, sustainable transport.
The partnership brings together three innovative companies, united by a shared vision for a greener, more sustainable future. Chargify has provided state-of-the-art EV charging technology, Redefine Properties contributed strategically located sites that cater to a variety of communities, and Mercedes-Benz South Africa has harnessed its leadership in EV innovation to support the transition to electric mobility.
Claudius Steinhoff, Co-CEO of Mercedes Benz encouraged strategic alliances, stating “We as Mercedes-Benz South Africa are investing into Chargify to build up the charging infrastructure across the country to make this change happen. But Chargify and Mercedes-Benz would not be enough, we need great partners like Redefine Properties”
This initiative addresses key challenges facing South Africa’s EV market, including range anxiety and limited charging infrastructure. By making EV charging accessible in high traffic locations such as shopping centers and business hubs, the collaboration is advancing opportunities for widespread EV adoption. These efforts also align with global sustainability goals, offering South Africans an opportunity to embrace transportation solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and contribute to factors such as long term energy resilience.
Kgosi Diphokwane, CEO of Chargify painted a picture of Chargify’s diverse range of charging sites, saying “Partnering with the likes of Redefine Properties makes so much sense. We’ve got the shopping malls that you can charge at, you get back to Alice Lane if you’re at the office, you can charge there as well. You can also charge at home ”, Diphokwane hinted at the new product offering of Chargify home chargers launching in 2025.
The addition of these charging stations is expected to have far-reaching implications for South Africa. As EV adoption grows, the local economy stands to benefit from job creation in EV-related industries, from manufacturing to maintenance and renewable energy integration. On a societal level, reducing vehicle emissions will improve public health, particularly in densely populated urban areas.
The launch of the 9 charging stations was marked by an official launch on 2 December 2024,at Alice Lane in Sandton, where leaders from Chargify, Redefine Properties, and Mercedes-Benz South Africa shared insights into the partnership and its role in shaping the future of transportation in South Africa. Guests were introduced to the charging stations, experienced live demonstrations of their functionality, and learned about the potential of electric mobility to transform the country’s economic and environmental landscape.
Dylan Koning, National Alternative Income Manager, of Redefine Properties concluded “This Alice Lane precinct is built off 4 star green rating standards, and offers solar heating, protective glazing, motion sense lighting and as of today electric vehicle charging stations”
Looking ahead, Chargify, Redefine Properties, and Mercedes-Benz South Africa are committed to further expanding EV infrastructure across the country. This collaboration is just the beginning of a long term effort to make sustainable transportation a practical, accessible choice for all South Africans.
